I haven't posted a trip in ages - mostly because I haven't had a good one. But this trip went perfectly last night so I thought I'd show. I did this all in one transaction. Also I should note that the finish/lysol deal could have been even better had I had more finish coupons, but I only had 2 so this is the scenario I came up with.

McDonald's Fruit & Maple Oatmeal Review

Ok, so let me first start off by saying that this is a very unofficial review. McDonald's did not ask me to do this, I just felt strongly about the oatmeal after I tried it this morning and felt compelled to tell someone about it. Also, I know what you guys might be thinking. "She has no right to complain about McDonald's. It's McDonald's!!" Well sure, but they have some decent stuff when you're in a pinch. And honestly, I really wanted to try it since I have a new found love of oatmeal recently. So here goes.

In case you hadn't quite figured it out yet, the top picture is from McDonald's website while the bottom picture is from my desk. And no, I hadn't stirred the oatmeal at all. But I had choked down about half of it.

Pros: It has some fruit in it. Apples, dried cranberries and raisins to be specific. It's under $2. It's oatmeal. Thus, it should be sorta healthy right? I'm doing Weight Watchers, so I'll throw in there that it's 6 PointsPlus (very good for breakfast). For the rest of you, it's 260 calories, 4.5 g of fat, 5 g of protein, 48 g of carbs and 5 g of fiber.

Cons: NO flavor. Let me say that again in case you didn't hear me. NOOOOO flavor. Zero. Zilch. I would venture to say it had negative flavor there was so little. Ok, ok, sorry. The menu in the drive through says there is some brown sugar in it but you'd never know. My refined culinary taste buds suspect a wee pinch of salt was not included in the recipe.

Bottom Line: If you're in a pinch, sure, get the oatmeal. But have reasonable expectations.

Yesterday I took advantage of the $0.25 shipping on the e.l.f. (makeup) website. At the last minute I remembered to use Ebates, and I'm glad I did. Honestly, when I first started reading about Ebates, I thought "come on, what's the point?". But I try to remind myself to go through Ebates every time I want to make an online purchase. I actually have $13 in my Ebates account which is pretty great considering it's 2% here, 3% there. It's not too hard to remember to use it when most blogs remind you about it when they are telling you some store's coupon deal. Here's how it works if you've never heard of it: Ebates is a cash back program. You sign up for a free account, and then when you're already thinking about purchasing something, search the Ebates website to see if the store you are wanting to purchase through is on the list. If it is, just by doing your shopping through the Ebates link instead of going directly to the store's website, you get a percentage of your purchase back! Now, my $13 is racked up over months of small online purchases, but hey, it's better than getting nothing! Absolutely nothing is different except that you get to the store's website through Ebates instead of on your own. And sometimes you find out about coupon codes through Ebates that you didn't know existed!
So, as you start doing your holiday shopping, I highly suggest you use one of the cash back programs like Ebates to lighten the load a bit. I've seen stores go as high as 8% during special promotions, so it really is worth it. For example, my purchase through e.l.f. yesterday was about $12. They are offering 4% cash back right now for e.l.f., so in a day or two, about $0.50 will be deposited into my Ebates account. Easy right? Give it a try. It didn't take long for me to see a post linking to the Black Friday Walgreens ad. They have a similar page in the ad listing a bazillion free things (that's a valid number, promise). And oddly, I'm excited about the $19.99 (after rebate) wrist blood pressure monitor. I've been watching these for months and never see them below $50, so this is fantastic. Other things that interest me - free Secret body splash, free Scunci hair bands, free Robitussin, and wait for it........free Dr. Pepper!!!!!!!!! Lots of $0.99 razors also a couple of pages later - which probably means free after a coupon. And now I want some Dr. Pepper so this post is over.

It never occured to me PC (pre-couponing) that drugstores would have great Black Friday deals, but I just saw Michelle's post and I'm super excited now! Is it weird that I'm wondering when they open? Maybe I'd actually consider getting out of bed before 10 am for the drugstores. There are 14 completely free items at CVS alone, which will probably mean quite a few money makers once we know more about the coupons that will be out. The ones I'm most excited about? Free Eucerin! That stuff is expensive. And free Carmex - I know a certain guy who likes this stuff. As soon as I see a preview for Walgreen's I'll link to that also.

My first ever freezer cooking day

I've been reading posts about freezer cooking (or batch cooking) for ages now and really thought it wasn't for me since I am single with no kids. But the other frugal blonde tried it a couple of weeks ago and was happy with her results, so on a bit of a whim I decided to give it a try today. I put some black beans in water to soak overnight and started going through a massive list of saved recipes (from various blog posts). I settled on Tristin's Zucchini Sausage Cornbread, Ham and Potato Soup, and a super awesome friend's spaghetti sauce (sorry, I have to ask if I can share the recipe). I had quite a bit of zucchini left over since I bought a 3 pack at Aldi, so I had the brilliant (ok, kind of obvious) idea to make zucchini bread. I searched and searched for my hometown church's cookbook to use my mom's recipe but couldn't find it, so I used a fairly healthy recipe I found online (recipe below). The black beans are something I cook about once a month. I don't have a recipe, it's just something I came up with. Which is super odd since given my mathematical (aka analytical, aka anal) mind, I typically stick to recipes and actually prefer baking over cooking. But I just cook the beans with onions, sausage, garlic, cumin and a bit of salt until I like the consistency - sorta mushy and really thick.
Anyway, I'm about done - waiting on the spaghetti sauce and black beans to cool down a bit before I put them in containers to freeze. I don't have any pictures but here's what I ended up with:

2 loaves of zucchini bread (should feed me for at least 8 breakfasts/desserts)
6 very generous servings of the cornbread (I had a little bit - wow, it's great)
3 generous servings of ham and potato soup (I had a full serving tonight for dinner - YUM)
6 containers of spaghetti sauce (should last me about 6 meals)
6 containers of black beans (4 meal size containers and 2 side dish containers - since I put sausage in it, it's a full meal)

As a conservative estimate, I'd say I made myself approximately 20 meals, plus snacks (did I mention some cookies are going in the oven later?). Hopefully this will last me about 3 weeks. Obviously I can't eat at home every single meal, I'd go crazy, but since everything tastes fantastic (yay for great recipes) I'm excited. The best part about all of this? I did my shopping at Aldi and spent.......wait for it......$30! And the only things I didn't buy were flour, sugar, spices, oil, etc. Aka, the normal stuff you always expect to have at home. That's about $1.50 a meal. My feet hurt, but I'm hooked to freezer cooking. Thank you fellow coupon bloggers!!!

UPDATE: Last night I had the ham and potato soup from the freezer for the first time. Maybe I just didn't thaw and heat it up correctly, but the texture totally changed. The milk curdled a bit. It was still edible, but not near as good as the first day.

I know that most of you reading this have probably already heard about Swagbucks, but I thought I'd stop for a moment and let all the rest of you know! Swagbucks is a website that allows you to earn "swag bucks" for various activities that you can later turn into gift cards for places such as Amazon. I started using Swagbucks a few months ago and have earned about $30 worth of gift cards so far. I don't really use it that often, but I do check it every day to get my 10-20 points a day (450 is a $5 gift card). There are several ways to earn, but I do the daily poll, any available "trusted" surveys, and I use it to search. Now, I'm not going to lie, nothing beats Google search, but every day I search for the day's name. Like today, I'm searching for "monday". I just hit the search button 10-15 times a day (I leave the website open all day) and usually earn 20 swag bucks by the end of the day. You also earn between 1 and 2 swag bucks a day if you download their toolbar. I am NOT a fan of toolbars, but I did it on one of my browsers on one of my computers. Basically, you should check it out. I spend maybe 5 minutes a day on it and it's nice to see your bucks accumulate. If you'd like to check it out, you can find it here. I recently found out about a paper called the Briefing. It's published by the Dallas Morning News and runs from Wednesday through Sunday and apparently has all the coupons in it. It's completely free, you just need to call and sign up (214)977-8333. While I was on the phone I decided to ask if they were running any specials on the DMN since the local paper I usually get stopped carrying the Red Plum inserts AND went up in price. Well right now they are offering a half off deal - Wednesdays and Sundays for only $8.48/month as long as you sign up for EZ pay (automatically charged each month). It's actually just Sundays and they are throwing in Wednesdays for free for some reason. In fact my sales rep claimed that Wednesdays sometimes have some coupons too. Not sure about that one. So that's actually $2.12 a week for coupons, which is significantly less than the $3 you have to pay anywhere else. So needless to say, I broke down and subscribed. I miss my $1 Plano paper with all the coupons!!

My Burt's Bees Grab Bag

So a week or so ago when the Burt's Bees grab bag was available (for $20) I decided to give it a shot since everyone had such raving reviews about it. I received it today and I think I did ok. I'm not uber impressed, especially after seeing some other people's loot the last time around, but I definitely got what I paid for. Oh, and P.S. do you see that tear on the upper right hand corner of my sheet (you have to look closely)? Yeah my fitted sheet has a HUGE hole in it. I've moved it around many times to try and reduce the damage but it's ginormous now. Why don't I just buy sheets? I have to buy sheets that will fit a 20" mattress and that is NOT easy to find, much less for a good price. I finally got a new 20% bed bath and beyond coupon today though, so it's time to buy. If you have any suggestions, or if you have a crazy large mattress too, let me know! I so don't want to spend the $100 I spent the first time around (king size bed).

My Ulta Finds 10/5

So this morning I read a blog post from Broke 207 about the great deals she scored at Ulta. I've driven by my local Ulta a thousand times but have never been in, so I decided to check it out at lunch. I printed off the $5 off $10 coupon and off I went. I knew I had two $3/1 Neutrogena coupons from a recent All You magazine and the recent printables. I think I did fantastic so I just had to tell you guys so you can go check it out for yourself. First of all, the store is pretty impressive. It's kind of like a larger, slightly lower end Sephora. Anyway, there was a ton of clearance on every brand of makeup so I pretty much stuck to that. I got a Neutrogena eyeliner that was on clearance for $3.99, which means $$0.99 after coupon. I got a Neutrogena eye shadow duo that was on clearance for $4.29, which means $1.29 after coupon. And then to get myself up to $10, I bought a Cover Girl blush that was $3.99. It wasn't on clearance and I didn't have a coupon with me, but I just needed a filler and I've been needing blush for a while now. So that is:

$3.99+$4.29+$3.99 = $12.27

- $5/$10 coupon = $7.27

- (2) $3/1 coupons = $1.27

+ $0.10 tax = $1.37

So I only paid $1.37 for all three items!! ($0.46 a piece). If I would have had a $1/1 cover girl coupon with me it only would have been $0.29 total, but I still think I did well. From now on when I see a $/$ coupon from Ulta I'm paying more attention!!

I just went to the cetaphil website to look up the exact name of the facial moisturizer I use for a survey I am currently taking and the landing page offers a $5/2 coupon for their new Restoraderm line (body wash and moisturizer). I tried it twice more to see if it's a fluke and it's not, but if you don't see it immediately wait a moment, the main page cycles through a few different ads. I've seen this line in those short aisles next to cosmetics at Walgreens for the last few months so I wouldn't be surprised if they go on some sort of sale soon. I'll definitely try both for the right price!

I went to Walgreens and CVS tonight but to be perfectly honest, I don't feel like writing up all the deals I got. If I would have had at least 1 stellar transaction, I totally would show you guys, but I didn't. CVS was out of almost everything I wanted, which after reading other blogs, seems to be the norm this week. Walgreens was stocked, but I had little RR's to start with and didn't plan well enough so I spent almost $10 out of pocket (I think, stopped counting after a bit). Just a blah day of shopping. The only cool thing that happened was that there was indeed a display of Jergens lotion at Walgreens that had $1/1 coupons attached to it so I was able to pick up 2 bottles for nearly free. They are $4.29 each (for the smaller bottle) and the deal is buy 2 get a $5 RR. So two costs $8.58, minus two $1/1 coupons is $6.58, minus a $5 RR is $1.58, or $0.79 each, which I am happy with. No $2 peelies on the Vaseline and the coupon isn't showing up for me online but I still bought one since they are $0.99 after RR. At CVS all I got was some Olay cleansing cloths for the other frugal blonde which were $0.49 each (bought 2) after ECB. So ya see? Not much to show. I'm having faith that next week will blow me out of the water! (And that I'll find some toothbrushes at CVS later this week). Hope you guys are finding great stuff!

Walgreens is fairly decent this week. There is the possibility of free toothpaste, but my coupon wasn't high enough in value to make it free so I decided to skip it. Also, I should note that the register reward for the Glade deal did not print out on either transaction so a manager had to come and ring up 2 fake transactions to pay for them. He used the candle refills to do it, NOT the candle holders, and it worked. So even though the tag below the candle holders indicated that it was included, they didn't print, so watch out if you want to do the same deal as me. Lastly, I had to add a filler item to my first transaction which still makes no sense to me since the subtotal was high enough and I had plenty of items without coupons (I had more items than coupons), but I took the $1 hit and moved on. Didn't feel like arguing.

I know there's not much to show here, but technically it was a good trip. I tried to buy the Tylenol pain patch, but since both the CVS coupon and the manufacturer's coupon were printables that looked similar the cashier wouldn't take them. So I haven't posted a shopping trip in quite a while because there really wasn't anything to speak of, but I was pretty happy with my trip last night. I wasn't motivated to go at all this week to tell the truth (I usually go on Sundays). But I've got to keep up with my register rewards or they'll expire on me! I did this in two transactions.

If anyone follows me close enough to notice, I haven't been doing much posting lately. I'm still here, it's just that I don't have much to tell you about. I'm not really a huge fan of the blogs that put out 30-40 posts a day with every little deal to be had. I'm selfish and just like to tell you about the stuff that I myself would do. Maybe this isn't the right attitude to have, but hey, this isn't my job, it's just a hobby, so that's the way I think it will stay. I only like to tell you about free samples available to everyone (and I always sign up for them first to make sure the deal isn't dead) and I only like to tell you about deals at stores that are super great. And it seems like everyone else is still going strong with a million deals but I seriously just haven't been excited about anything lately. Any thoughts on this? Am I being to harsh?

My "I'm bored, let's go to Target and Walmart with the 8/1 P&G when I SHOULD be cleaning" trip 8/31

So I'm not going to show a picture since I think it would be cruel considering every single coupon I used expired today, except one (the gain dish liquid). Instead I will just tell you a couple of the awesome things I found.

First, Target:

You know those Lysol no touch hand soap things that were $2 at CVS a couple of weeks ago? Well I've been using mine since the day I bought it (in my bathroom) and I absolutely love it. The dispenser never gets dirty or water marked because I never touch it! And the amount it dispenses, along with the scent, are perfect. So I saw them at Target today for $6.04!!!! The sign said price cut, and for once in Target's history with me, I believe them. This is a big price cut no matter where you shop. I remembered that when I bought the one at CVS I cut all 5 of the coupons I had rather than just 1 because I thought I could find them cheap at Walgreens too. So turns out I just happened to have 5 of the $3/1 coupons from the 7/11 SS that expire today! Well I didn't want to buy that many even though $3.04 is a phenomenal price, so I bought 2. I figured that if Lysol doesn't put out coupons for the refills for a while I'm set using the refills in these 2 packages. Yay!! (I put my other 3 coupons on the products themselves just in case a shopper noticed them tonight and could take advantage of them).
That was really the only exciting thing at Target. I got some travel size Tide and a clearanced kid toothpaste for the other frugal blonde's kiddo. My total for everything was about $7.

On to Walmart:

The only thing I knew for sure I would pick up at Walmart was the Gain dish liquid. There is a $1/1 in the 8/29 P&G and Walmart is selling the small bottles for $0.97 and the larger bottles for $1.97. My store had the original scent and the lavender scent. Lavender somehow reminds me of my allergies so I bought 4 of the original scent. And the computer accepted the coupons at face value so I got $0.12 overage.
My exciting find at Walmart: In the 8/1 P&G there was a $3/1 Febreze Noticeables Warmer OR Starter Kit. The warmer was priced at $2.54. The incredible thing? This is not a sale or anything special. It was the regular tag. I'm telling you, I read the packaging and the coupon at least 10 times to verify that I wasn't crazy and it was the right item. Guess what? I got the face value of these coupons too! I bought 4, so that's a total of $1.84 overage. Now, these didn't come with any actual oil, but I couldn't pass up making money on them. Some day soon I will buy the refills with some grand coupon we get. So I knew if I got overage I'd have $1.96, so I just picked up one of those huge packs of gum in the checkout line and my total was $0.66!!!

Yay for easy shopping trips!

Walgreens Trip 8/29

As expected, things did not go fully as expected yesterday :). You guys know I had everything planned out per my post here, but I wasn't really feeling shopping yesterday. It started with the newspapers. I went to my closest gas station to pick up the local cheap paper like I always do. They only had 1 left! And it was the same time that I usually go on Sundays so I was a bit confused. I really have no clue where else to get that paper short of going to the distribution center so I broke down and bought two "big city" papers as well. So I only got 3 papers (I usually buy 5 - $5 total). Things got a little bit better when one of the big city papers accidentally had 2 P&G inserts. Anyway, I was feeling slightly down (stupid I know). I got all the coupons ready, which didn't take long at all, and left. I got to my favorite Walgreen's and the girl working the cosmetics counter is the best. She puts most of the RR stuff up front so you don't have to go searching all around. Well she surprised me with the Carmex cream and lotion! It's a monthly RR deal - they cost $4.99 and you get a $4.00 RR, so only $0.99! Well of course I had to have one of each at that price. There are no coupons that I know of, but still a great deal. Now, since I spent quite a while chatting with her about the deals this week and how she didn't get her coupons in time because she ordered from a new coupon clipping service, I didn't stop and think through how this would change my transactions. I was lucid enough to realize I didn't need fillers (the folders) anymore, but somehow I didn't think about the actual money I would be spending. So let's just say that I spent more out of pocket than I EVER have before at Walgreens. But it works out ok in the end, especially given that I usually spend under $1 each week. Plus it proves that not everyone has a fantastic week. So here's what went down:

Transaction #1:

Received $27 in RR's. So I pretty much broke even. Thus, everything works out OK in the end. And it's a good lesson for me. Next week I'll make sure my brain is on when I shop!!

UPDATE: I forgot to mention the coupons I got from the lovely catalina machine! I don't get them that often even though I always try to check out in cosmetics with my debit card (that's the magic combination). I got:

2 Scenarios for Walgreens 8/29

Walgreens has a lot of mysterious RR deals this week - that is, we don't know the prices to go with a lot of the register reward deals (P&G - I'm talking to you). So I came up with a couple of scenarios for the deals we do know about to make sure I roll my RR's before they expire. There is only one money maker this week so we need to take big advantage of that! At first I was all excited about the $10 RR on the Irwin Naturals vitamin product but on second thought I will NEVER use this. Thank goodness I have a little bit of coupon common sense today. I'm skipping that deal all together. I have $15 in RR's to start the week with:

(3) $1 RR's expiring 9/3
(2) $2 RR's expiring 8/29
(2) $4 RR's expiring 9/5 and 9/6

My plans (assuming things are in stock - we all know things NEVER go as planned):

Transaction #1 (I should note that this one transaction takes care of all the RR deals that I'm super interested in - I'm sick of toothpaste):

(2) $3.50 - Softsoap Body Wash
- (2) $1/1 from September All You
$4.00 - Breathe Right Strips 10 pack
- $1.50/1 from 4/11 RP
$2.00 - Carmex Moisture Plus Lip Balm

So I will have used $12 in RR's and $0.09 cash, and received $12.99 in RR's, making this a $0.90 money maker!. The best part to me is the small OOP.

New P&G Coupon Booklet by Mail-In Rebate

There's a new P&G rebate (for a coupon booklet) available again. I don't think I mentioned anything about it last time around, but it was the very beginning of my blogging adventure. Here's how it works: you purchase $50 worth (before tax or coupons - yay) of P&G brand products (see the list of brands here) between September 1 and December 31. Then you just circle the P&G products on the original receipts (does not need to be all on one) and mail them in with the form found here. The last coupon booklet was a $100 coupon booklet with triplets of almost every coupon and they are awesome - some are similar to the monthly P&G insert but some are higher in value and more rare. And of course the expirations are farther out than your typical insert. This is definitely worth it and easy to obtain given that it's $50 BEFORE coupons. You will most likely get this pretty quickly without trying if you're a couponer at CVS and Walgreens. From 9/1 on I'll be sure and point out if a product will qualify.

The Glade Sense and Spray will be on sale for $5, and there is a $3/1 coupon here (it's in the household category). Print the coupons now!!! So while my Walgreens trip went exactly as planned, my CVS trip was the exact opposite. By the end of my shopping excursion I had gone to 3 stores (mainly for SoBe's) and still not found the Blink eye drops. Now that I'm wearing contacts I use eye drops a lot more when they aren't in because of dry eyes and it's the only thing I really wanted. Oh well. I got a rain check. So I'm not going to list all of the 16 SoBe's below since they were all free and contributed nothing to the transactions. I love the Fuji Apple Pear variety the most so I got as many as I found

My Walgreen's trip went exactly as planned today. I did spread it out into 2 stores to make sure I didn't cause one store to go low on stock. Because I did the exact transactions I outlined here, I am not going to repeat what I did, only my totals.

Total after coupons and RR's: $0.00

Received (5) $2 RR's from the Head and Shoulders.

So I spent $15 in RR's ($0 cash) and received $10, so it's like paying $5 for all of the above items. That's a savings of 94%. And even though I reduced my RR's, it wasn't by much and I still have Sunday of next week to roll the rest!

It isn't really a great week for Walgreens, but that's because they are still promoting Back to School stuff pretty heavily. Luckily all the register rewards I have expire the 22nd, so I can make use of the ad starting the 22nd too if I don't use up all my register rewards this week. Here's what I'm starting with:

I will probably do this transaction 5 times over the week (since I buy 5 papers a week I will have 5 of each coupon for the Head & Shoulders). The reason I put the Right Guard in the transaction is because you CANNOT have more manufacturer's coupons (RR's are considered manufacturer's coupons) than you do items. With the 2 Head & Shoulders you have a coupon for each, so in order to use an RR you've GOT to buy something else. With the Right Guard you only have 1 coupon, so that's 4 items, 3 coupons which leaves room for one RR. I hope that makes sense!

Another thing I could do to use up a $3 RR is buy 2 Scrubbing Bubbles Toilet Cleaning Gels and 2 other Scrubbing Bubbles toilet product, along with 2 Right guards (with all appropriate coupons). This should total to $3 and have room for one RR.

Hopefully we will find out about some monthly deals or I will find some clearance or something to use up the other RR's. If not, maybe next week will be better.

Other notes: If you need tissue (I would say Kleenex but it's Puff's that's on sale) they are $0.99 this week - I do for sure so will probably pick some up if I need to use up RR's.
