I need some advice/opinions

At this point in my blogging "career" if it's even ok to call it that, I haven't really found a rhythm.  I have about 15 followers through blogger, and about 15 subscribers through Google reader.  I'm up to about 10k hits on the site but it's also been a few months.  So I thought I'd take some time to stop and let you guys know what I'd really like to be doing with my couponing and then pitch a small idea.

About a month into my couponing ventures I took a trip to Kroger and got two bags of rice for $0.09 each.  On my drive home from the store I couldn't stop thinking about how I knew I would not eat that rice in any decent amount of time.  So why did I buy it?  Because it was cheap/almost free.  Yes, my blinders are totally on when it comes to cheap stuff.  No discretion.  Now we all know, based on the hundreds of posts about this, that it's awesome to buy something like rice for $0.09 and then donate it to a local food bank or something similar.  What I couldn't stop thinking about though, was why was I not doing this constantly?  Look how easy it was to get something that could supplement a family's dinners easily for a couple of weeks or more!  I started talking to some people about it (Mom and Kelly) and they agreed.  I could fairly easily (in theory) get my hands on a LOT of "almost free" food and donate it.  I then began thinking about how I could get my hands on my coupons without paying for them (to keep my oop low).  Needless to say, because of life, my forward movement on the idea slowed down drastically.  But now I'm back on the saddle again.  I know there is probably a strong couponing presence in the DFW area (My Dallas Mommy) but I've yet to find it outside of moms (no kiddos for me).  So I'm still working on this idea of basically asking people to donate their coupons.  This could be people that don't coupon at all but get the paper, or people that coupon casually (like my mom) and just donate the leftover coupons.

Anyway, this is getting too long!  The point is, while I brainstorm some more on how to move forward with this idea, I need your opinion on a much smaller one.  Some of the couponing blogs have weekly posts such as the "CVS $5 Challenge" by Centsable Momma, or "Change for a Change" by Zeal for a Deal where they outline ways to get a lot of loot with a little money ($5 at CVS, $3 at Publix and Kroger).  I was thinking of starting something similar for a store we all have a love/hate (some hate/hate) relationship with - Walmart.  Why Walmart?  Because it's a store that I'm 90% sure is EVERYWHERE.  So no matter who reads this, they could participate.  I myself am not in love with Walmart, but if I have a list and a purpose, it's fine.  I was also wondering if I should narrow it down even further and say I will only include newspaper coupons OR only include printables.  I guess it depends on my readers.  I also need some input on the dollar amount.  How much would you like to spend each week, or rather how much can you spare?  What types of items should I include?  Definitely grocery items - but not all junk food, toiletry items, etc.  Any opinion would be greatly appreciated!

CVS Trip 8/8 - Saved 95% on $53.26 worth of stuff!!!

It was a great day for CVS and Walgreens.  I found everything I wanted without going all over the metroplex!   Notes for this transaction: The razor had the peelie for free shaving cream just like at Walgreens, and I have used the soap dispenser about 4 times now and LOVE it.  The smell of the cucumber soap is very nice and fresh.  I have been wanting to try it ever since I saw it weeks ago but didn't want to pay the price.  Get one!!!  If you need a coupon I have a few more!

- $5/1 from May All You Magazine (there is also a $4/1 printable or check your 5/16 SS insert)
= $4.99 plus a $9.99 ECB, so a $5 money maker!!!

$9.99 - Lysol Healthy Touch automatic soap dispenser
- $3/1 from 7/11 SS
= $6.99 plus a $5 ECB, so only $1.99 (I know this isn't free but I REALLY wanted to try it)

$8.97 - Schick Hydro Razor
$3.99 - Schick Hydro shaving cream
- $5/1 from 8/8 SS insert (for razor)
- $3.99 from peelie found on razor for free shaving cream
= $3.97 plus a $4 ECB, so free plus $0.03 for razor and shaving cream!

(2) $7.49 - All Free and Clear 3x concentrate (32 loads)
- $7.49 from B1G1 in store sale
- (2) $1/1 from 8/1 RP insert
= $2.75 each, or $0.09 a load - AWESOME price for All Free and Clear - this will probably last me a year

(6) $0.89 - Dove chocolate bars
- (2) $0.89 from B2G1 in store sale
- (3) $0.50/2 coupons from the magic coupon machine
= $0.34 each (my magic coupon machine coupons were expiring, that is what I shall blame this purchase on)

Total before coupons: $53.26

Used all my ECB's ($20.99 worth)

Total after coupons and ECB's: $2.92 ($0.41 worth of tax)

Received $18.99 in ECB's, so reduced my ECB's a bit, most likely because of the soap dispenser, but still did a great job.

Just like with Walgreens, all that really matters to my bank account is the $2.92, so based on that amount spent, I saved 95%!!

Walgreens Trip 8/8 - Saved 93% and got $91.63 worth of stuff!!

I did three transactions at 2 stores.  Fun things to note: The Secret Soothing deodorant was on clearance for $2.59 (reported at $2.29 for other areas of the country) and is producing the $3 RR.  There are no coupons but it's a money maker already so great deal for some expensive deodorant.  Also, my cashier pointed out that certain Schick hydro razors have peelies on them to get the shaving cream free when you buy the razor.  It wasn't on the razors in the normal place, it was on the razors in a special display near cosmetics.  This was true at both stores I went to (the razors at CVS had them too).  Lastly, because I purchased the U by Kotex tampons, for both transactions a catalina printed out for a free 18 ct box of Playtex gentle glide or sport tampons (up to a $4.99 value).  This is awesome as playtex gentle glide is what I actually use.  I had heard reports of this a couple of months back but I never got them.  It's important to use a debit or credit card or these types of coupons don't seem to print out.

Totals for the day: 

Total value (with no coupons) of all merchandise: $91.63

Total paid: $33 in RR's and $6.66 cash 

I started the day with $33 in RR's, spent them all, and now have $39 in RR's.

Since all that really matters to my bank account is that I paid $6.66, I will calculate savings based on that, not based on all the register rewards.  Based on paying $6.66 for $91.63 worth of merchandise, that's a savings of 93%!!

My Target Trip 8/5/2010 - Saved 82%

I made my first big couponing trip to Target in a while yesterday and it was successful, but only because the manager took over!  Almost half of my coupons weren't recognized by the system even though they were clearly valid.  The manager was a doll though.  Here's what I did:

Total after coupons (no tax on this transaction): $15.03

That's a savings of 82%!!!

When my original cashier was moved to a different line and the sweet manager took over she pushed through one of the $3/3 as the full value instead of marking it down so that's how I got the $0.09 overage.  I don't think she would have normally done this but we were just trying to get through the transaction.  I will donate most of this stuff and if you take out the $5 for undies, $10 ain't bad!
